From branch counter to digital wallet – Evolving the Post Office Travel Money Card

Introduction

The Post Office is the UK’s largest retail network, with over 11,500 branches nationwide, serving millions of customers every year. As the country’s leading provider of foreign currency, the Post Office has long focused on offering convenient, reliable travel money products. One of the flagship products is the Travel Money Card, a prepaid currency card that allows customers to load multiple currencies and pay securely abroad.

First Rate Exchange Services partnered with the Post Office to develop and evolve this product, ensuring it meets customer needs while driving travel money sales.

The challenge: Adapting to changing traveller needs

The Post Office faces the ongoing challenge of maintaining its position as the UK’s top travel money provider in a competitive market. Customers increasingly demand convenient, flexible solutions for accessing foreign currency abroad, with multiple currency options and seamless digital functionality. To achieve sales targets and meet evolving expectations, there was a need to develop the Travel Money Card into a multi-currency solution that could compete with other prepaid travel cards on the market.

Solution: Co-creating a market-leading card

First Rate worked closely with the Post Office to transform the Travel Money Card from a branch-only, single-currency product into a fully digital, multi-currency offering. The collaboration involved end-to-end support, from product development to marketing campaigns that drive adoption and usage. First Rate’s expertise in foreign exchange and branch operations enabled the Post Office to enhance convenience for customers, while simultaneously boosting travel money sales across its network.

Bringing the Card to Life

  • Early launch
Launched in 2006, the Travel Money Card initially existed as a blank, branch-only card that customers could only obtain by purchasing in-branch and loading it with currency on-site. First Rate collaborated with the Post Office to upgrade the card into a multi-currency solution, which involved integrating digital functionality and launching a companion app, enabling customers to load, manage, and track multiple currencies on the go. This transformation required close coordination on design, technical development, and operational logistics.
  • Evolution to Multi-Currency
First Rate ensured that the Travel Money Card was integrated seamlessly into branch operations, providing staff with training and tools to advise customers effectively. This support helped staff drive sales by highlighting the card’s convenience and flexibility.
  • Marketing and Promotions:
First Rate worked with the Post Office on targeted campaigns ahead of key travel periods such as summer holidays, Easter, and half-term breaks. This included promotional materials, branch-level campaigns, and digital content designed to increase awareness and uptake of the Travel Money Card.
  • Customer Experience Enhancements:
The introduction of an app and multi-currency functionality provides customers with greater convenience and control over their holiday spending. Features such as easy top-ups, balance tracking, secure payments, and integration of Apple Pay & Google Pay improved customer satisfaction and positions the card as a market-leading product.

Results Through Innovation

The collaboration between First Rate and the Post Office has delivered significant outcomes:

  • The Travel Money Card evolved into a flexible, multi-currency solution available to millions of customers.
  • 3-time Winner (2012, 2020, 2025) of Best Prepaid Card at the Card & Payment Awards.
  • Strengthening the Post Office’s reputation as the UK’s leading travel money provider, offering innovative, customer-centric solutions.
  • The travel money card is used to make a purchase every 1.5 seconds, across 197 different countries or territories.
